The University of California is a public university system in the sunny state of California, U.S., that helps to educate young bright minds since 1868. Getting to Know the University of California

The university of California consists of 10 campuses and each of them is controlled by Regents and President (since 2013 the President of UC is Janet Napolitano, former United States Secretary of Homeland Security).

  1. Berkeley (also referred to as Cal). The one and only Berkeley that started it all. It was the first UC campus, hence the oldest one. Cal is divided into 14 colleges and schools. It attracts students with its scientific research programs and a long record list of contributions to the scientific life, such as studies on lipoproteins and heart disease, molecular evolution, treatment of global malaria and building one of the biggest telescopes. Berkeley offers amazing undergraduate, graduate and professional programs for all the UC applicants.
  2. Davis (since 1908). This is the home of charismatic students and passionate academics known as Aggies. The campus, located only 20 minutes from the state capital, welcomes its visitors with the spirit of Northern California lifestyle. It’s the place where dreams do come true.
  3. UC Los Angeles or simply UCLA (since 1919). Known as the land of optimism and inspiration. Seeing the bright side of life and future possibilities is the main strategy of this university. And it seems that the strategy is working pretty good since UCLA introduced to the world 13 Nobel laureates, 12 MacArthur fellows and helped to create more than 100 companies, based on its technologies.
  4. UC San Diego (since 1960). Considered to be one of the best 15 research universities in the world, it is a place where hard work, creativity, and actions for the greater good are valued above all. Apart from multiple research programs, it also offers 29 sports club teams to keep its bright minds in a good shape.
  5. UC San Francisco (since 1873). Students of this university believe that their great mission is to heal the world. UCSF is one of the leading institutions that’s focused specifically on improving health care methods and innovating health sciences.
  6. UC Santa Barbara (since 1909). Located in a breathtakingly beautiful area near the Pacific Ocean, UCSB is a center of creativity and independent thought. The students here are taught to conduct research in humanities, arts and sciences in innovative ways.
  7. UC Irvine (since 1965). The youngest university of the Association of American Universities to ever hold membership. UC Irvine Medical Center is the only university hospital to administer Orange County.
  8. UC Santa Cruz (since 1965). UCSC offers a wide variety of graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as numerous opportunities to be engaged in the life of community and student political activism. It is also an honored owner of one of the weirdest campus mascots – the Banana Slug.
  9. UC Riverside (since 1954). Known as the university of distinction and diversity, UCR is a proud home of a very ethnically diverse family of students. It’s a place to share experience, culture, and ideas with people from all over the world. In 2005 UCR became the first public university to provide gender-neutral housing options.
  10. UC Merced (since 2005). The youngest member of the University of California system. Being the first American research university built in the 21st century, it is the center of modern technologies and innovations. Its students are active participants in the fight against landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

University of California Admission Requirements

If you are planning on entering the UC as a freshman, then you’ll have to be ready for the exhausting process of gathering all the required documents and information for the admission. The main advice for all the applicants is to start the document hunt as early as possible to be sure that you have everything on your hands by the time the application process starts.

Here’s what you have to do in order to get accepted to UC:

  • Send your application before the deadline. You can send just one application to as many campuses as you want. Don’t worry, they’ll all receive them. That way, you’re gonna have higher chances of getting through.
  • Be ready with your ACT/SAT test results.You have to collect your test results no later than December of the final year of high school. The result will be later sent out to campuses along with your application.
  • Prepare your UC personal statement. This is a very important step since this is your chance to express yourself and your ideas. Don’t be scared to be open and honest. People want to know more about you as a person and your ambitions rather than to read dry facts from your biography.
  • Pay all the fees. Make sure that you include the application fees with your application. You are offered two ways of payment: by credit card or by E-mail.
  • Submit transcripts. If you are among the lucky ones who got accepted to UC, then you’ll need to send the transcript to the admission office of the campus you’ve chosen.

You can tell about some educational courses you had troubles applying to and share your story of overcoming them.

How has this challenge affected your academic achievement? You can write about any kind of challenge: personal, social, educational, etc. The main point here is to explain how this challenge affected you and how you coped with it. Why specifically this subject? Did it influence your decision about your future career? What level have you reached with this particular subject? It’ll help them to understand which disciplines can help you to show your abilities to the fullest.
